  • Bhutan raised all 108 Jangchub Chortens in just nine hours, making Project 108 a remarkable collective accomplishment.
  • The 76th Chorten was dedicated to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The initiative showcased the Kingdom’s Buddhist traditions, spiritual values, and spirit of community participation.

Bhutan marked a historic milestone on 1 November 2026 as 108 Jangchub Chortens, or Stupas of Enlightenment, were constructed in just nine hours at Gelephu Mindfulness City under Project 108, a Royal Initiative of His Majesty the King. The 76th chorten was dedicated to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the significance of the initiative beyond Bhutan’s borders.

Each chorten stood 15 meters tall, with 108 meters separating each structure along the Mau Chhu, creating a sacred corridor. The number 108 holds deep significance in Buddhist philosophy, reflected in the 108 volumes of the Kangyur and the 108 beads of a traditional prayer mala. The chortens symbolized the path to enlightenment and carried prayers and aspirations for peace, compassion, and the well-being of all sentient beings.

More than an architectural achievement, Project 108 represented Bhutan’s deeply rooted tradition of zhābtog the voluntary offering of time and labor for the common good. Thousands of people came together in a collective expression of faith, generosity, and shared purpose, demonstrating the enduring strength of Bhutanese community values.

For international travelers, the occasion offered a meaningful insight into Bhutan’s cultural and spiritual identity. While the Kingdom is renowned for its Himalayan landscapes, monasteries, and pristine natural surroundings, its distinctive appeal also lies in traditions that continue to shape everyday life. Experiences such as these allow visitors to understand Bhutan beyond conventional sightseeing, through its people, beliefs, and living heritage.

The event also brought attention to Gelephu Mindfulness City, envisioned as a new model of development integrating Bhutanese spiritual heritage, environmental harmony, innovation, and economic opportunity.

With the 108 chortens now standing as a lasting symbol of collective devotion, Project 108 added another remarkable chapter to Bhutan’s story, one that invited the world to discover a destination where spirituality, culture, and well-being remain central to the travel experience.
